As part of the year of Italy in China, world-renowned artist Sandro Trotti has brought his creations to Beijing. He is showing 90 pieces in the National Museum of Fine Arts.
This is the 72-year-old's first exhibition in China. Trotti joked that his late father, a builder who didn't support artistic pursuits, was probably laughing with delight in his grave.
But the exhibition is just a beginning. Trotti will soon begin a lecture series, as a visiting scholar at China's Central Academy of Fine Arts. He became a professor at Rome's Academia di Belle Arti in 1973, and has been teaching ever since.
Sandro Trotti, Italian Artist said: "I used to know what to teach. But recently, I've become less clear. My experience tells me I should pass on the spirit of modern art to the younger generation. That spirit is to doubt and challenge convention. I can tell them what not to do, but not what they should do. Then they can go and explore."
Born in 1934 in Italy's Marche, Trotti began to learn painting at the age of six. He entered the Liceo Artistico di Stato at 15.
The young man started his artistic exploration with futurism. And from 1959, his name became known in art circles.
He confirmed his own style in 1965 with the abstract series "Creates". Trotti finally settled down in the late sixties, with marriage and the birth of a daughter. Since then, women have been a central theme on his canvases - nearly translucent in the early days, and densely colorful later on.
Trotti's Beijing exhibition runs until May 18.
